Moving Your Data to a New Mac

Need help moving from your old computer to your new one? We've got a simple guide to using Migration Assistant right here.

Moving Your Data to a New Mac

Start by connecting both the old and new computer to the same network using Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Use Migration Assistant

On your new Mac:

  • Open Migration Assistant, which is in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.
  • Click Continue.
  • When asked how you want to transfer your information, select the option to transfer from a Mac, Time Machine backup, or startup disk.
  • Click Continue.

On your old Mac:

  • Open Migration Assistant.
  • Click Continue.
  • When asked how you want to transfer your information, select the option to transfer to another Mac.
  • Click Continue.

On your new Mac:

  • When asked to select a Mac, Time Machine backup, or other startup disk, click the appropriate icon.
  • Click Continue. You might see a security code.

Once you select the computers you’ll need to validate the security code on each computer.

Then its just a matter of picking all the data you want to transfer, and letting it run.

It may ask you to put in a password for accounts that you are moving, if you don’t know the password and make one up, that will be the password for that account on the new computer so make sure you make a note of it.
