Free 10-Week Illustrator Course! (2009)

This June, after many requests, we are delighted to offer a free, 10-week, worldwide, Illustrator course. This class will be taught by Steve Laskevitch, founder and lead instructor at Seattle’s Luminous Works Training Center. Steve is consistently rated one of the top 5 Adobe Certified Instructors in the world. We are very lucky to have convinced Steve to join us for this fun 10-week experience.

Want to enroll? Sign-up here: Illustrator CS4 Course Enrollment.

Note: Providing these free training courses requires that we attract a large audience. To offer this class, we need at least 1,000 people signed up to participate, so help us spread the word!

And yes, you can pass this offer along to friends, or even post it on your blog. Help spread the word. As I mentioned, we need a minimum of 1,000 people enrolled to make this free class viable.

Read on for an extended Q&A, and to ask your own questions in the comments. Steve is currently mapping out the class details. If you have a topic you’d like to see him cover, mention it in the comments below.

Q: What Time Do Classes Start?

A: That depends on where you live. People attend these workshops from all over the world. We start at 11AM Monday mornings in Seattle. Here are the start times for time zones in the United States:

2PM – Eastern (New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Florida)
1PM – Central (Chicago, Minneapolis, Dallas)
12PM – Mountain (Denver)
11AM – Pacific (Seattle, Los Angeles)
10AM – Alaska
8AM – Hawaii

For international participants, follow this link to see how 11AM in Seattle translates to around time zones around the world: What time is 11AM in Seattle? Here are some example start times for different cities:

7PM – London, Dublin, Algiers, Lagos
8PM – Amsterdam, Paris, Oslo, Prague, Zagreb
9PM – Athens, Jerusalem, Cairo, Kyiv
10PM – Moscow, Dubai
11PM – Tashkent
Midnight – Islamabad
1AM Tuesday – Bangkok, Hanoi, Jakarta
2AM Tuesday – Hong Kong, Beijing, Perth
3AM Tuesday – Tokyo, Seoul
4AM Tuesday – Melbourne, Sydney
5AM Tuesday – Vladivostok
6AM Tuesday – Auckland

Q: How Long Are Classes?

A: Each class is roughly 60 minutes long, with an additional 30-45 minutes for audience questions. The Q&A is typically pretty valuable, so plan to stick around.

Q: What If I Don’t Have Illustrator CS4?

A: This class is taught with Illustrator CS4 on the Macintosh. However most of the learning applies to earlier versions of Illustrator, as well as PC users.

Q: How Many People Can Attend Each Webinar?

A: Our Webinar tool, GoToWebinar, has a limit of 1,000 attendees per class. Based on the popularity of our other free training, we expect to reach that limit on most classes.

Q: Can I Download Recorded Copies of Classes?

A: We record a high-resolution copy of each class, and we plan to make recorded copies available for a slight fee.

Q: Can I Record Copies of the Class Myself?

A: You know, we originally said this was okay. But honestly, if you value these classes enough to want a copy, we’d rather you paid for the downloads. That income is what keeps us in business so we can offer future free classes. That said, if you do make a personal recording, we do ask that you don’t post those recordings on the Internet, or share them with others.

Q: How Can This Be Free?

A: We are trying to make a big splash, and we love working with a large audience. Help us spread the word. If we continue to attract a full audience, we’ll be able to keep offering these types of free courses for InDesign, Illustrator, Fireworks, Dreamweaver, and other Adobe products.

Q: Can I Post an Invitation on my Blog?

A: Yes. Please help spread the word. We need as many people as possible enrolled to make this free class format viable for us. You can post a link to the following URL, which we will keep updated as details change:

As a thank-you, we’ll be posting a regular list of the top blogs and websites where people found out about this unique free Photoshop class.

  1. I have recently upgraded from CS2 to CS4. I’d like to learn how the new tools work, and get some tips on using Illustrator from Pros who work with it every day.

  2. Enjoying these sessions so much, now dragging my son out of bed at 5:30 each morning to join me!! (he is 14).

  3. I previously took the online Webinar series for Photoshop and InDesign and I am really looking forward to this class as well. Jason is an amazing wizard in these programs and I have learned a lot. Having just moved into a new job last year doing everything from creating newsletters to designing a website, these classes have been invaluable!

  4. I attended a few of the Photoshop sessions and they were very helpful. I wish you would post the itinerary for the Illustrator course so I can plan which course to attend.

  5. Can’t wait! signed up 😀

PS – I watched a few of the Ps ones, is there anyway I can buy just the PDF guides you used, not the lessons as well at a cheaper price?

  6. Looking at the schedule, it happens to be on Monday at 1PM for me, so, i am at work at that time. Is there any way to offer the same class at a different time to accomodate even more participants?

  7. HP –
We’re in the process of planning the class itinerary with Steve now. We’ll post that as soon as it’s available.

    Jack F –
I’ll pass your suggestion on to Craig. Perhaps we can do it easily.

    Cassel –
Since we’re broadcasting these webinars to the entire internet it’s a challenge to pick the best time for that broadcast. We’re still looking for that perfect time. Fortunately, as with our other webinars, we will be recording each session and making the recordings available for purchase and download so if you can’t attend the live session you can still watch the class.

I’m happy to answer any other questions. Feel free to email me at

  8. HP (and everyone else) we just posted a tentative updated class itinerary. Steve is planning to work in a week focused specifically on drawing with the Pen tool, so there may be an update before the course starts. But this should give you an idea of the breadth of information Steve will be covering.

  9. Jem –

Users at all levels should be able to benefit. How much they benefit will depend on the session. If you can, please attend the first class to see if you think this webinar will work for you.

I’m happy to answer any other questions. Feel free to email me at

  10. I have tried to register for the Illustrator course and have had no luck! I have been able to connect to Photoshop and InDesign. But no Illustrator! Help!

  11. I’m interested in purchasing all the class downloads. Do they include the Q & A afterwards?
