Creative
Tip: Five
Photoshop Crop Tool Tips.
Update: We've
added a video version of this tip here: PS-CropTips.mov.
Most
of us work with Photoshop's crop tool every day. Can this basic
tool still hold any magic we haven't already uncovered?
1.
Delete vs Hide: When cropping an image, glance at
the top of your screen for the crop tool options. If you hide your
cropped area, the edges of your original image will remain intact
but hidden after the crop. That means if you change your mind later,
you can move the hidden part of your image back into frame using
the move tool.
2.
Stop the Crop Snapping: Does anyone else find it
annoying how the crop tool automatically snaps to the edge of your
image when you get close? Turn that behavior off by choosing View
> Snap To > Document Bounds.
3.
Crop and Rotate: Hover your cursor slightly off
one of the corners of your cropping box and it turns into a rotate
icon. You can rotate your cropping box to crop your photos and straighten
them at the same time.
4.
Crop and Distort: Turn on the cropping tool's perspective
option (also in the crop options), and you can adjust your corner
points independently to correct for distortions in objects that
were not photographed straight-on. (Doesn't work with the "hide"
feature selected.)
5.
Fun Multiple Crop Technique:
This last one is more entertaining than useful. Adobe's incomparable
Russell Brown demonstrates a fun cropping tip in this 5
minute video tutorial.
