Creative Tip: "Indent to Here" in InDesign or Quark.

Ever find yourself wanting to create a quick hanging indent for a drop cap or bulleted list?

The special "Indent to Here" character in QuarkXPress or InDesign makes it a snap. Type this character in a text block and all remaining lines of the paragraph are indented to that point.

To make things easier, Quark and InDesign use the same shortcut:

Macintosh: Command + \ (backslash)
Windows: Control + \

InDesign also lets you access this feature from the menu bar: Type > Insert Special Character > Indent to Here.

Note: The Indent to Here character is indicated by a dagger symbol when the "Show Hidden Characters" feature is turned on (shown above in our example).

Bonus: Watch Craig's video version of this tip!

Source: This tip inspired during an InDesign coaching session with Priority Support Member Andrea Herrick. Aptly researched by CreativeTechs' versatile office manager David Ingersoll. Our example uses dummy text from a site featured in QuickTips #38: Lorem Ipsum Generator. (We'd also like to include a plug for a great freelance book designer: Jennifer Shontz at Red Shoe Design.)

Tech Tip: Use EasyFind instead of Spotlight (occasionally).

Apple's Spotlight search is one of the big features touted in Mac OS X Tiger. It promises to "find anything, anywhere, fast."

The problem is, sometimes it doesn't. For those occasions we suggest turning to EasyFind, a handy free utility from Devon Technologies:

EasyFind Product Page

A classic problem with Spotlight surfaces when trying to use a tip from our archives (Tip #43: Change Microsoft Office's serial number). The solution requires finding and deleting an invisible file in the Applications folder. Except Spotlight won't find invisible system files -- making this simple fix unnecessarily hard in Mac OS X Tiger.

Using Easy Find makes it easy to search for the needed invisible file (named "OfficePID"). Select the found file and chose File > Move To Trash from the menu.

Source: This tip is inspired by several factors. According to our Google Analytics reports, Tip #43 is our most frequently Googled article. It was written before Tiger was popular, and we're taking this opportunity to update the solution to get around Spotlight's limitations. For a review of Spotlight's strengths and weaknesses check out this Macintouch article.
