Tip Two: Plan an emergency Xserve replacement.

If your studio relies on an Apple Xserve for key business tasks, you should be aware that in a pinch you may be able to use a desktop G5 as a replacement.

CreativeTechs recommends setting up an automatic nightly clone of your Xserve to an external hard drive. In the case of hardware failure on the Xserve, you can boot another Mac off that cloned drive. This provides a stand-in server while the Xserve is repaired. A quick-replacement strategy of this type allows you to maintain a team's productivity even when dealing with major hardware failures.

Note: In the CreativeTechs approach, this nightly clone is only one piece of an overall studio backup strategy. Keep an eye open for CreativeTech's annual backup article scheduled for the final week of 2005!
