CreativeTechs QuickTips #49 Week of July 11, 2005

Tip One: Create Burn Folders in Mac OS X Tiger.

Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger includes a handy new feature that can simplify the process of organizing and creating archive CDs for your studio's completed projects.

Burn Folders allow you to collect and organize files and folders to be burned to CDs or DVDs. Plus, they allow you to easily burn multiple copies of the same disc (the ability to burn multiple copies may allow studios to use the built-in software instead of Toast as their primary CD-Burning tool).

In the Finder, choose "New Burn Folder" from the File menu. A folder with a small yellow/black burn icon is created. Name your folder and copy completed projects to it. When you are ready to burn a disc, select the folder and choose "Burn Disc" from the File menu.

[In Tip #39 we recommended "waiting until late June or July" before upgrading to Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger. So here we are. Is now the time to consider an upgrade? Join CreativeTechs' Craig Swanson for an evening presentation "Do Designers Need Tiger" at the School of Visual Concepts. July 20th or 21st. Registration details at the bottom of this page.]

Tip Two: Buy a studio-license when you upgrade to CS2!

The retail version of Adobe Creative Suite 2 uses a computer-specific product activation similar to QuarkXPress 6. This approach can make serial number management a big headache for many studios.

If you manage a creative team with even a few designers, we strongly recommend that you purchase future Adobe software and upgrades through Adobe's Transactional Licensing program:

Ordering transactional licenses may add a little time and paperwork to your up front purchase, but it greatly simplifies managing your studio's serial numbers in the future.

With a transactional license, you get a single serial number for the whole studio (Mac or PC); and no product activation headaches to deal with. Even the smallest studios can purchase Adobe products this way. Most mail order and catalog resellers sell this type of license. (Plus it can save money on larger purchases.)

It might be a little more work up front, but the pay-off down the road is much easier maintenance of your studio's software serial numbers.
