Second CS4 Preview Tonight at CreativeTechs.

CS4_demo-LW.jpg

Last week's CS4 Social at Luminous Works was a hit. Hours after the Adobe unveiling, a lucky group of Seattle designers and photographers had a chance to see CS4 in person (including some of the new 3D features in Photoshop CS4). Tonight, we're holding another CS4 preview at the CreativeTechs office in South Lake Union:

Select and Distribute Guides in InDesign.

InDesign-AlignGuides.gif

Need a series of equally spaced guides in your next layout? No problem. You can select and align ruler guides as easily as any other objects in InDesign.

Simply use the Selection tool (the arrow) and shift-click on several guides to select them, or drag a selection box over multiple guides. Then click on the horizontal or vertical distribution buttons in the Control Panel. You can also use InDesign's Align panel (Window > Object & Layout > Align).

Note: You can't select guides and other objects at the same time. When you drag your marquee over multiple guides, make sure not to select any other objects on your page.

Check your Battery's Health with coconutBattery.

coconutBattery-250px.gifDoes your laptop seem to die faster than it used to? It probably does. Laptop batteries lose capacity over time.

Download coconutBattery, a free utility, to reveal some important details about your laptop battery's health.

Apple says their batteries are designed to retain up to 80% of original capacity after 300 full charges. You can see in this screenshot from coconutBattery, how a 4-year-old iBook whose battery has been charged twice that number now has only about 17% of it's original capacity left.

You can maximize your battery lifespan with some good maintenance practices. But however well they are maintained, laptop batteries do lose capacity over time.

Flood of CS4 Blog Posts Hit the Web.

cs4design.jpg

We're counting down the hours for tomorrow's unveiling of Adobe Creative Suite 4 (CS4). And the flood of blog posts from everyone who has been working with the prerelease copies of CS4 are already starting. We'll probably miss a bunch of good posts, but we'll try to keep these links updated as they appear over the next day.

Resize Your Web Browser with Bookmarklets.

Safari-ResizeBookmarklet.png

Here is a fun trick to try in your favorite web browser. Paste the following snippet of javascript code into the address bar where you normally type a web address:

javascript:window.resizeTo(800,600);

This tiny script tells your web browser window to jump to 800x600 pixels in size. A handy shortcut for web designers proofing sites. Here are a collection of resize links based on that simple javascript code:

Resize Link: 640x480
Resize Link: 800x600
Resize Link: 1024x768
Resize Link: Full Screen

You can save these links as Bookmarklets — small javascripts saved as normal bookmarks — to easily resize your browser windows on the fly.

In the rest of this tip we'll walk you through adding Bookmarklets in Safari.

Adding Bookmarklets to Safari.

To add these Resize Bookmarklets to Safari, just drag the links from this webpage up into your Bookmark Bar.

Safari-AddBookmarklet.png

Once they've been added, click on the bookmarks button to organize your Bookmark Bar. Add a folder to hold all your resize scripts (Bookmarks > Add Bookmark Folder) and group them under a single pull-down menu.

Expand Selections Without Rounding Corners.

PS-TransformSelection.gif

If you've ever wanted to slightly expand the size of a selection in Photoshop, you may have experienced this frustration. When you choose Select > Modify > Expand, Photoshop expands the size of your selected area — but it rounds the corners in the process.

Next time, choose Select > Transform Selection instead. Photoshop's traditional transform box appears around your selection. Drag a corner to resize it, or type new values into the Options Bar. Ta-da. An enlarged selection, with square corners!

Seattle CS4 Social Event!

CS4-Logo-White.pngIf you live in the Seattle area, be one of the first to experience CS4 in person. We're partnering with Luminous Works in Ballard for a special CS4 social gathering.

Join us September 23 from 6 to 8 PM, the day of the official CS4 announcement, at the Luminous Works Schoolhouse in Ballard. Instructor Steve Laskevitch will give a demo of the Best of CS4, we'll have light refreshments and drinks, and perhaps a few surprises!

Register: Luminous Works & CreativeTechs CS4 Event!

Note: Space is limited, and this event has proven very popular (it is almost entirely full). When the remaining tickets run out, we'll add a special Waitlist for a second CS4 event. We're still working out the schedule and logistics for that.

Sneak Peeks at Adobe Photoshop CS4!

Don't want to wait to learn what CS4 has in store for us? Check out this handheld video from the Photoshop World Keynote earlier this month. Adobe's Senior VP of the Creative Business Unit, Johnny Loiacono, showed off some remarkable new features. Scrub forward 16 minutes into the video for the serious Photoshop CS4 magic.

Seam Carving for Content-Aware Image Resizing

One of the jaw-dropping new features in Photoshop CS4 is a technique called content aware resizing. This was developed by a team of Israeli developers. In August 2007, Photoshop Product Manager, John Nack, wrote about this video in his blog, calling it "Holy crap"-worthy imaging technology.

In a post at that time, TechCrunch wrote I Want This In Photoshop Immediately! Adobe agreed, because nine days later, Nack announced one of the co-developers of this technology had joined Adobe. A year later, Photoshop CS4 will feature this technology as one of the big new features.

Save All Open Documents in InDesign.

InDesign-SaveAllOpenDocs.png

Here is a terrific hidden InDesign keyboard shortcut. Say you've got a bunch of InDesign files open that you've been jumping between, and you need to save them all before stepping out for lunch. Use InDesign's Save All command to save all your open documents.

Mac: Command-Option-Shift-S
PC: Ctrl-Alt-Shift-S

CreativeTechs is Hiring. (Yet Again)

HelpWanted-iPhone.pngSpeaking of Labor Day, looking for a great job? We're on the hunt for a talented Macintosh technician!

Over the last decade, CreativeTechs has become the Pacific Northwest’s premiere team of Macintosh experts. Our consultants support the largest and most successful creative teams in the Seattle area. That includes design firms, ad agencies, photographers, video studios, and in-house creative departments.

This will be the last position we add to CreativeTechs for about a year. So if you've been tempted to contact us before, now is the time!

WORD-OF-MOUTH REWARD: Know someone who would love supporting Seattle-area creative teams? We're giving away a new iPhone or iPod Touch to the person most responsible for referring our next team member to us. So help spread the word!

What is a CreativeTechs Macintosh Consultant?

CreativeTechs’ focus on supporting creative professionals means we are looking for someone with a unique blend of great technical skills, and a knowledge of the graphic design industry:

#1: Great Macintosh troubleshooting skills.
#2: Experience supporting graphic software.
#3: Something Extra.

Mac Troubleshooting: You'll need to move confidently between a wide variety of environments. You must be very good supporting Mac OS X, with a variety of hardware, printers, and networks.

Graphic Software: You should be very comfortable troubleshooting a wide range of design applications in a production setting. Including Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, QuarkXPress and many others. The more experience you can demonstrate with design-related workflow the better.

Something Extra: Every new team member adds something special to our team. Beyond the basics, what extra can you bring to our team? With our focus on supporting creative professionals, do you have unique talents you could bring to our clients? Video editing, web development, or audio expertise are particular areas of interest.

A great job for the right person.

You'll be working with 2-to-4 clients each day, and troubleshooting a wide variety of problems in the field. You'll be exposed to our design-focused client base, and see a wide range of environments we support. This is an intensive learning experience for new team members. Every consultant on our team gets their start doing this type of responsive field support.

You should work yourself out of this position as you develop the technical and client management skills to take on ongoing support relationships with larger creative teams.

We work with a lot of fun, talented clients — and we make a difference in their lives. Our business is built entirely on referrals, so you'd better be great at taking care of clients.

When you are ready to advance to some serious origami mastery, check out Lang's books on advanced origami techniques, as well as a great video on TED.

Robert Lang on TED.

Robert Lang presented at the TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) conference in Monterey, California in February 2008. In this fascinating 15-minute talk, he delves into the mathematical and engineering principles behind origami paper folding. The examples are intricate designs that are beautiful and surprisingly practical.

Robert Lang's Origami Software

RobertLang-Treemaker.pngFinally, if you want to completely submerge yourself in origami theory, Lang has developed his own software program call TreeMaker, which helps define the underlying structure for very complex origami models. This program was originally developed as a method for exploring the mathematical theory involved in complex origami shapes. It eventually grew into a tool that Lang used in creating some of his most complex designs. The software is a free download if you want to give it a try:
